Chair's Report for 2024 AGM

The Forum is your Forum. Anyone over the age of 16 living in its area is a member and the Management Committee is there to represent you. The Forum’s aim is to ‘enhance and/or maintain the where appropriate the quality of the area in which we live. In the past year the committee has tried to achieve this by increasing engagement with its members and focussing on some of the major issues which are regularly raised by them. These include:

Community Engagement

  • held four open meetings

  • increased social media presence

  • regularly updated to website. In the last year, there have been 757 unique visitors, and the site sessions have increased by 88%.

  • monthly newsletters which are views by an average of 182 people.

  • increased our mailing list from ~90 to 273 people

Traffic Issues

  • Traffic Calming Survey completed for the 5 roads (Battle Estate), recommendation made and discussions ongoing wit TfWM and our Councillors about delivery

  • Major issues remain with Pershore Road and Dogpool Lane which we haven’t had the capacity to tackle. Discussions are ongoing with the Councillors and more focus is required in this area.

Flooding

  • The Flood Action Group is being reconstituted.

  • We have a WhatsApp group for residents, but take-up has been poor

  • Have engaged the authorities to look at whether there are ways to reduce flooding or make the are more resilient. This has led to plans to protect some of the most vulnerable properties.

  • Created a web page with resources for the group and residents on the WhatsApp group.

HMOs and Exempt Accommodation

  • Raised awareness of issues

  • Produced case studies of problem properties

  • Have good support from Cllr Scott and Al Carn’s office and are working with SPPOA and SPRCA.

  • Joined the city-wide EA Forum

  • Tried to engage with the Councils EA team to see how we can collaborate with them to tackle Selly Park issues but without success.

Litter and fly tipping

  • Supported the litter picking group

  • Have not been able to find a solution to systemic issues. More work with our Councillors is required.

Community building

  • We planned to have a community event but were unable to make this happen.

Pershore Junction

  • We have engaged with the property manager to try and build a working relationship so any issues can be resolved and find opportunities to get the students engaged with the community

I would like to thank all the committee members who contributed to making this happen. Without your work, we would not have made any progress on any of these issues.

We will need to agree the priorities for next year. The committee has a limited capacity, and we need the input from members to decide them and what is achievable. We want to start the conversation today and will follow up online and at the next Open Meeting. The committee has discussed what we think we should be doing and have proposed the following:

  1. Working with the authorities to carry on trying to fix the problems such as traffic, exempt accommodation, traffic and flooding we have been working on over the last year. We would like to tackle more but resources mean we cannot unless more members become actively involved.

  2. Holding community events. We didn't manage to have one this year and we need to decide what to do next year. The big events are proving difficult to arrange with available resources so we may focus on supporting smaller, resident led events. If you have any proposals, bring them along.

  3. Fund raising. The Council has frozen our grant due to the financial issues. We need to generate ideas how to generate income.
